Hatching chicks is a rewarding journey for adults, and for children it improves their empathy, patience, sense of responsibility, and understanding of biology. Therefore, Pip's Hatchery aims to make hatching chicks accessible to more people.
We have a commitment to high welfare, our chickens will always free range over our 13 acre farm.
We promote the chicken breeds on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust's priority watchlist, to celebrate and protect our native breeds.

Buff Orpingtons have the best temperament out of the many breeds we have kept, they are laid back and cuddly which makes them very rewarding pets.
Being so laid back means they are very easy to keep in a garden, as it is very unlikely they will be energetic enough to flap onto a fence and escape. This makes them ideal backyard birds.
They produce between 200-250 eggs in their first year of laying, which is good news for your breakfast!

Pip's Hatchery is based just outside of Boroughbridge.
We are named after one of the first three hens we ever bought; Pip, Peep, and Robbie (Gina's painting of Pip and Robbie is above). These three chickens sparked an interest in raising high quality rare breed chickens.
Fun Fact! A 'pip' is the name for the first hole a chick makes in its egg.

Isobel has always loved chickens and started hatching her own chicks at the age of 12.
She currently has 34 hens and a Buff Orpington cockerel called Boots (pictured above)

Georgina cares for the hens on a day-to-day basis. She also looks after our flock of Poll Dorset sheep who share the farm with all the chickens and help keep the grass well mown.

Gina is an artist who paints the flora, fauna, and landscapes of North Yorkshire.
She is also the hen's personal portrait artist!
